Society News

Members of St Agnes Old Cornwall Society have honoured Mrs Kath Knight,  on her retirement from nearly three decades as secretary.

They chose the society's first Christmas lunch to pay tribute to her devoted and efficient service through 27 years. The president, Ron George, presented her with a framed scroll marking her election as an honorary life member.

And expressing members'  thanks, the immediate past president, John Ricks, handed her a box of chocolates and the treasurer, Alison Stansfield, gave her a large bouquet.

Mrs Knight has taken a keen interest in Cornish matters since she and her late husband, Sidney, moved from Malvern to Porthtowan 32 years ago. She admitted she had enjoyed being in office and thanked members for their loyal support.

A life-long Methodist, she attends St Agnes Methodist Church, was a fully accredited local peacher for 58 years and the secreary of the church's Monday Club for 25 years.

At the society's annual meeting members elected as the new secretary Barrie Bennetts (Cuntellar Newodhow Kernewek) a retired West Briton reporter. Ron Geroge is the new president stepping into the shoes of John Ricks, who has been president or vice-president through the last decade. Annual reports revealed a membership of 80 and an average meeting attendance of more than 50.
