30th BIRTHDAY SOCIAL EVENING REPORT
Photo L to R: Pol Hodge, Bert Biscoe, Chairman Hilary Thompson and Ian Maxwell, who is a founder member and Past President,
On
Wednesday 13 December the Gerrans & Porthscatho Old Cornwall Society
celebrated in style its thirtieth anniversary. Fifty members and friends
were joined by the Deputy President of the Federation of Old Cornwall
Societies, Mr Terry Knight, to enjoy a splendid buffet supper, which was
followed by a truly Cornish entertainment in song and poetry by
inimitable bards Bert Biscoe and Pol Hodge. The Chairman recalled that in its thirty years not only had members listened to talks on many aspects of Cornish history and made memorable pilgrimages; they had joined in projects which reflected the movement’s aim to ‘gather up the fragments that are left, that nothing be lost.’ These have included re-planting of an ancient avenue of trees, the re-siting of a medieval stone coffin, reclamation of a roadside pond, the preservation of an ancient lane, spot listing of old directions posts and recording of stiles in the four Roseland parishes. ‘Trelawney’ was sung with great gusto to round off a memorable evening.

LIST OF SPEAKERS FOR THE 2007 - 2008 MEETINGS A very small group formed St Gerrans & Porthscatho Old Cornwall Society in 1976, but since that time the Society has grown considerably. We have undertaken studies of the stiles of various parishes in Roseland click for details.
The Society meets at Porthscatho Memorial Hall at 7 30pm on the second Wednesday of each month (from October to May) when a speaker, sometimes with slides/power point, talks on a Cornish subject.
In the summer a “pilgrimage” is made to a place of “Old Cornwall” interest.
Membership for the season is £6. Visitors are welcome at any meeting for a small fee (£2).
Note change of venue as meetings now take place in Porthscatho Memorial Hall.
