Introduction

The Oxford dictionary defines the word Diaspora as follows :

" • noun 1 (the diaspora) the dispersion of the Jews beyond Israel, chiefly in the 8th to 6th centuries bc . 2 the dispersion of any people from their traditional homeland. — ORIGIN Greek, from diaspeirein ‘disperse’."

It has been estimated that between 1861 and 1901 a quarter of a million people left Cornwall to make a new life elsewhere. Whilst this period saw the bulk of the emigration, hundreds if not thousands of Cornish men and women had left Cornwall before 1861, and thousands more have left since 1901. Some eleven million people around the world can trace all or part of their ancestry back to Cornwall and some of these have formed or belong to Associations and gather together to enjoy their cultural heritage. Those who live too far away from one of these groups have found that the internet has allowed them to make contact with others of Cornish descent to learn more about Cornwall and its people.

This web page has been added to the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies' site in order to let people around the world pass on what is happening in their part of the worldwide Cornish community. If you are Cornish and do not belong to an Association and feel you have some news relating to Cornish history or culture in your area then why not drop us a line and let us know.

The Federation in conjunction with the Cornish Gorsedd is offering those Cornish Associations without a web page to display their newsletter the opportunity to have one free of charge. All you need do is either e-mail or post me the following information :

1. a list of officers.

2. a contact address

3. your programme of meetings

4. information on any special events.

5. some news of what you are up to .

6. any photos of group events.

Click on contact to send me an e-mail or post it to George Pritchard, 2, Penhalvean Cottages, Penhalvean, Redruth, Cornwall, U.K. TR16 6TQ.

This is the type of thing you will get. Click here,

Below is a letter that was published in the very first issue of the Federation's Journal "Old Cornwall". Since its publication the links between Cornwall and the Cornish families who have settled elsewhere has continued to grow. Today with the internet and fast air travel the links grow stronger. When Colin Roberts,  the Gorsedd Administrator, first approached Terry Knight, the Federations President, and me about adding this page to the Federation's web site neither of us hesitated in agreeing. Terry is also the Editor of the Journal which has now reached its 246th issue.

Finally, for those of you doing Cornish family history we have a page of links where you can get lots of free information and help.

The first issue of the Old Cornwall Journal in 1925 carried the following letter

"June 10th, 1924. CLARE. SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

To THE SECRETARY, FED. O. C. SOCIETIES.

Dear Sir,

I had a West Briton sent me this week from Cornwall and noticed a paragraph about your new Federation.

I am so glad to know of such a society and I hope and trust that it may grow and flourish ; as a Cornishman, 12,000 miles or more away from the dear old land I love so well, I send you hearty Cornish-Australian greetings. Please convey to all members my sincere wishes for a great International Cornish and Westcountry Association.

I came out about three years ago and I have never regretted the step, and can say that Australia's need is for more Cornishmen. We could take 1,000 men of the right type right away. "There is room," as the old song says, " for millions more " Our new Labour Premier The Hon. John Gunn, is a firm believer in Cornishmen as settlers, his secretary is a Cornishman (Mr. Harry Kneebone, and I am sure he would favour the flow of his countrymen hither.

Our three-daily paper editors in Adelaide are Cornishmen: Sir J. Langdon Bonython. edits the Advertiser, Sir William Snowden edits the Register and the Journal—an evening paper.

Mr. Harry Kneebone, M.P., is the Chairman of the Labour Party and edits the Daily Herald. I am sending you interesting particulars of the Cornish Association.

We have a branch in Adelaide 400 strong—and by my efforts I have been successful in forming a branch at Clare, 90 miles from the city (Adelaide), a country town of about 1,000 inhabitants—about the size of Lostwithiel —membership 60 to 100.

We shall be pleased to get into touch with your society, and any books, rules, papers, etc., which you have at your disposal we should only be too glad to distribute.

My desire is that such branches of the Cornish Association should be formed in all parts of the Empire and World, and that an International Headquarters should be formed at, say, Truro—being the capital with a paid General Secretary. I will send you a copy of our rules further on.

Trusting to hear from you soon. I am, yours fraternally,

OLIVER J. CASTINE."

Mr. Castine's desires and hopes are no narrow ones, but the time really- does seem to he approaching when they may be realized. The Cornish Associations are coming together more and more, and the Cornish sense of nationality is becoming articulate, at home and abroad.

Canada

At a time when we in Cornwall are celebrating the Holman Film Archive and memories it will bring to so many, I recently heard from Chris Stacey who was a third generation Holman man before moving to Canada. Chris tells me that another Ex Holman man Glyn Nicolas, is living over there and says "I found he had gone to school with my mother. He’s 87 years old and just amazing. He writes long emails to me about his memories of Camborne and other places in Cornwall and even around the world and I have gathered them all and now have over 100 pages that are absolutely fascinating. His daughter is Troon (yes, named after that area near Camborne) Harrison a well-known Canadian writer of children’s books and there’s no doubt she got her writing skills from her father. Glyn’s busy right now, taking a course to learn Italian!  Where do people get the enthusiasm?"

Troon Harrison has written over a dozen children's books, including The Storm Lion of Penzance, The Long Weekend, Goodbye to Atlantis, and Courage to Fly, which were selected as “Our Choice” by the Canadian Children's Book Centre; The Dream Collector, which won the Blue Spruce Award and was a finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Award in 2000; and A Bushel of Light, which was selected as an Honour Book for the Geoffrey Bilson Historical Fiction Award in 2001. She lives in Lakefield, Ontario. Click on book cover to read more.

If there are any more ex Holman / Climax workers out their who would like to share their memories then please contact Phil Hosken at marrack@btinternet.com .

MEETING OF CORNISHMEN about 75 Cornishmen met in the office of R. Bishop Esq. and then adjourned to the Star and Garter, committee appointed with purpose of having a social gathering at an early day; only Cornishmen to be allowed to attend, plus Mayor, Captain and Chaplain of "Topaze"; nearly 200 Cornish on the island - a fact which took many old residents by surprise [Victoria Daily Chronicle, 1863-01-06, p. 3]

Hi George,

This year Penkernewek will not be having a St. Piran's tea. We have been so busy with our book that is coming out and we will be having a tea for the book release in April. Therefore we asked Albert to speak for our March meeting and since the Heritage Center has both a Cornish Room and a Welsh Room, we asked him to do his Celtic talk to include both groups and recognize both St. Piran and St. David. This year the Cornish will be recognized at the Heritage Center from April to August with our display area devoted to our Cornish Heritage.

Brad wrote and asked me to reply since he has not been keeping up with the Heritage Center calendar.

If I can be of any further help, please let me know.
